“Honour your father and mother – which is the first commandment with a promise – that it may go well with you and that you may have long life on the earth.”  Ephesians 6:2-3

The promise of God to those who honour their parents is a good one: long life on earth. This is the first commandment with a promise – a promise is on the condition of obedience. Please note that the promise is not just about long life. What is the point of having a long but miserable life? The promise of God to those who obey His command is that of a life where you see that “all goes well with you”! It is a long and successful life.

To show honour to father and mother is to show them respect in what we say and do. It comes from an inward attitude of esteem for their position. The Greek word for honour means “to revere, prize, and value.” Through them, God gave us life.

During this month of May when we celebrate “Mother’s Day”, let us not just celebrate them on just one particular day, but every day. In the way we love them and obey them in the Lord, in the way we show our appreciation and value their opinions, let us show them that we honour them. May we always celebrate our mothers, and in doing so see that “all is well with us” as we enjoy long life on this earth!
